Årets bästa musik 2023

Art is a way of staying engaged and in love with the world. It is also a form magic, its alchemical power transforming reality, if only for a moment, making the mundane profound.

2020-talet är en period med globala kriser; pandemi, miljö, krig. Musikflödet oöverblickbart spretigt, alla förväntningar och fördomar kan uppfyllas. AI är den automatiserade retromanin, dödsrunan den mest passionerade musikjournalistiken. Att bry sig om ny musik är något helt trivialt. BCNVT är något så anakronistiskt som musikentusiaster; vi fortsätter att leta efter något nytt runt hörnet. Men det är det till synes triviala som ger livet, i en galen värld, ett slags mening. Without further ado:

Album:

  1. Avalon Emerson – & the Charm

    På sitt debutalbum & The Charm tar DJ:n Avalon Emerson sina bästa produktioner och mixar dem med kärleken till Cocteau Twins. Resultatet blir underbart direkt och förförisk popmusik som, i alla fall för en stund, känns gnistrande ny. En skiva full av välskrivna hitlåtar. Avslutande “A Dam Will Always Divide” är årets allra mest euforiska melankoli. /Elias Hillström

  2. Laurel Halo – Atlas

    Kanske ger titeln Atlas en ledtråd om att musiken färgas av platsen på kartan där Laurel Halo nu bor: Los Angeles. Sköna, soliga, skeva, lätt obehagliga ljud – som jag föreställer mig den staden – avlyssnas bäst i ett flöde. Som att acklimatiseras och njutningar uppenbarar sig. /Mattias Holmberg

  3. Ryuichi Sakamoto – 12

    Ett avsked kan vara att man, istället för stora gester, bara går iväg med ett ödmjukt leende på läpparna. Så tänker jag mig Ryuichi Sakamoto i det långa farväl som pianostyckena på 12 utgör, efter många års kamp mot cancern. Det är svårt att föreställa sig en mer värdig musik men Sakamoto är aldrig tung, han svävar lättar iväg…. /Stefan Zachrisson

Årets bästa förvaltare av något slags lovers rock-sensibilitet: De sydafrikanska sångerskorna Ami Faku, Nomfundo Moh och Tyla. Alla är de ”pure bliss” att lyssna på där de kan tänkas dyka upp: för att göra ett generiskt amapianospår hypnotiskt eller när grannen spelar Tylas superhit ”Water” på så hög volym (säkert från någon spellista med aktuella Tiktok-hits) så att hennes underbara röst är urskiljbar genom väggarna.

Årets fråga: Är det här D’n’B 2023? Mest positiva svaret gav Nia Archives ”Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against Tha Wall” och Debby Friday ”Let u in”. 2024 frågar vi om happy hardcore.

Årets roligaste konstaterande: Samtliga världsdelar finns representerade på min årets 200 bästa låtar-lista (möjligen inte Oceanien denna gång, men australiensarna klarar sig ändå). Afrika är urstarkt 2023.
