1988 fyllde jag 16, gick på gymnasiet och bodde i Borås. Musik upptäckte jag genom att lyssna på radioprogrammet Bommen på söndagskvällar och läsa NME och Melody Maker på biblioteket. 1988 är även året då Sverigedemokraterna bildas, TV direktsänder KU-förhören i “Ebbe Carlsson-affären” och Kalla kriget drar sina sista suckar. Bakmaskinen är årets julklapp. 1988 uppfattas, 30 år senare, inte som något slags “klassiskt” musikår, snarare tvärtom. Men 1988 har alltid pockat på mig: det är något speciellt med det där halvt bortglömda året. Nostalgi eller vassa tänder? Båda! 1988 var en brytningstid, på ett sätt jag bara kunde ana när det begav sig: post-punken hade tappat kraft, det letades nya vägar. Lekfullheten fanns överallt, inom independentscenen, på topplistorna (även tråkighet fanns överallt, men just nu ignorerar vi detta). 1988 håller fortfarande på. Ett slags “state of mind” och påminnelse. Idéer lever vidare, dået och nuet blandas. Man formar liksom ett eget “1988” (var så god och byt ut mot valfritt annat år). 1988 håller fortfarande på. Jag gräver vidare bland acid house, techno, hip hop, soul, sophisto-pop, post-postpunk, indie-pop, “ocean rock”, ambiens, jazz… Exakt hur mycket bra musik kan det finnas egentligen? 1988 är även en Facebook-grupp, med tips och konversation liknande den grupp som ledde fram till boken I hear a new world: 1958–1962.
